UK employment market 'recovering'

The UK jobs market is showing signs of recovery, according to a survey of recruitment agencies.
The monthly research from KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) found "marginal increases" in both perm and temp appointments in August. "This is first time we have seen really positive news for the UK jobs market in 17 months," the report said. …However, the report added that it was too early to say whether the encouraging figures signalled an end to the recession.

"It seems that employers are becoming more confident in their hiring decisions," said Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, although the latest official jobless figures showed that the number of people out of work in the UK had risen to 2,435,000, its highest level since 1995.

From our own experience we have seen our client base increase by nearly 16% and temps out on hire has increased by 63% since April this year.  Without wanting to tempt fate this trend appears to be continuing (at least for now).

There is no doubt that the recruitment market is becoming more buoyant and we are having to work harder at recruitment to ensure consistent availability.  This combined with current uncertainty and speculation, many companies having lower headcounts than normal following cost management, returning students and the seasonal increase in volumes towards Christmas may mean that planning ahead for your recruitment needs may be more important than ever this year.
