The Pro's & Con's of Students

At this time of year many agencies (and indeed many companies generally) begin to rely heavily on the availability of students to cover any requirements they may have.  Students represent an educated and motivated pool of labour with an availability that fits in well with our traditional holiday season.

You may be surprised to learn that HEADS Recruitment purposely limit our reliance on students and assign them to only cover specific short term contracts.  Very often contracts which start out as a short term requirement are extended for various reasons (extended sick cover, increasing work levels etc) and there is a real danger that in September when the students are returning to their studies you can suddenly find yourself with a number of requirements to refill.  This means losing whatever experience has been built up by the student workers to start again.

This situation is further compounded by the fact that many industries also start to get busier at exactly this time (the seasonal increase to Christmas actually starts in September).  What you have then is gaps left by vacating students, requirements to cover through increased business and a reduced pool of available labour because everyone else is in the same situation.

Often, a better solution when the contract duration is not certain is to place an individual who is available longer term if necessary; obviously this needs to be carefully managed as an individual who is looking for ongoing work but only getting ad-hoc requirements from their agency can quickly become disillusioned.
